Celebrity Chef Wan Sentenced to Pay RM150,000 for Defamatory Posts About Ex-Son-in-Law Celebrated Malaysian chef Wan Muhammad Wan Ismail, better known as Chef Wan, has been ordered by the High Court in Kuala Lumpur to pay RM150,000 in damages to his former son-in-law, Mohd Nor Izzat Mohd Johari, for defamatory statements made in social media posts. The case stemmed from a series of posts published by Chef Wan on his Facebook and Instagram accounts in December 2019. In these posts, the chef allegedly accused Mohd Nor Izzat of being a “cheat” and “liar” who had scammed his daughter of RM10,000. Mohd Nor Izzat filed a defamation lawsuit against Chef Wan, seeking damages and an injunction to prevent further defamatory statements. During the trial, the court heard evidence from both parties and found that the chef’s posts had indeed damaged the plaintiff’s reputation. In its judgment, the court ruled that Chef Wan’s posts were “false and malicious” and had “caused serious harm” to Mohd Nor Izzat’s character and livelihood. The court also noted that the chef had failed to provide any evidence to support his allegations. As a result, the court ordered Chef Wan to pay RM150,000 in damages to Mohd Nor Izzat. The chef was also ordered to remove the defamatory posts and issue a public apology on his social media accounts. The judgment serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible social media use and the legal consequences of making defamatory statements. It also highlights the need for public figures to exercise caution when making public statements about individuals.Chef Wan Ordered to Pay Damages for DefamationChef Wan Ordered to Pay Damages for Defamation Malaysian celebrity chef Datuk Redzuawan Ismail, known as Chef Wan, has been ordered to pay 150,000 ringgit (US$31,800) in damages to his former Irish son-in-law, Gavin Edward O’Luanaigh, for defamatory social media posts. The Court of Appeal overturned a High Court ruling from early 2023 that dismissed the allegations made by Chef Wan as non-defamatory. Chef Wan is now liable for general, aggravated, and exemplary damages, totaling 150,000 ringgit, as well as 40,000 ringgit for legal costs. O’Luanaigh, who adopted the Muslim name Salahudin Ghaffar, was married to Chef Wan’s daughter, actress Serina Redzuawan, from 2010 until their divorce in 2017. He filed a lawsuit in 2021, claiming that eight social media posts by Chef Wan were defamatory towards him and his current wife. Chef Wan initially defended his statements, claiming they were based on facts without malicious intent. However, the High Court ruled in May 2023 that the statements were not defamatory and were published without malicious intent. On Thursday, the Court of Appeal reversed that decision, finding that the statements made by Chef Wan were indeed defamatory. Chef Wan has also been permanently banned from publishing any further defamatory statements about O’Luanaigh. The court further ordered Chef Wan to pay 5% annual interest on the awarded damages from the date the lawsuit was filed until full settlement.Celebrity chef Datuk Redzuawan Ismail, popularly known as Chef Wan, has been ordered by the Shah Alam High Court to pay RM150,000 in damages to his former son-in-law for defamatory social media posts. The plaintiff, Mohd Norhafez Shahrudin, had filed a lawsuit against Chef Wan in 2019, alleging that the latter had made several defamatory posts on Facebook and Instagram. The court ruled that the posts made by Chef Wan were defamatory and had damaged Norhafez’s reputation. The judge also ordered Chef Wan to remove the posts and issue a public apology. Chef Wan’s lawyer, Datuk Seri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, said that his client was disappointed with the court’s decision and would be filing an appeal. “We believe that the court erred in its findings and that the posts made by Chef Wan were not defamatory,” Shafee said. Norhafez’s lawyer, Mohd. Zamri Ibrahim, welcomed the court’s decision and said that it vindicated his client’s reputation. “We are pleased that the court has recognized the defamatory nature of the posts and has ordered Chef Wan to pay damages,” Zamri said. Chef Wan and Norhafez were previously in-laws, as Norhafez was married to Chef Wan’s daughter, Serina Redzuawan. However, the couple divorced in 2017.
