Just 24 hours after enduring a luckless day at Royal Ascot, Lordan enjoyed a much better afternoon in the Irish Derby meeting’s feature event. The Joseph O’Brien-trained Henri Matisse was sent off the 9-4 market leader following his impressive win in the Leopardstown 2,000 Guineas Trial in April. Lordan settled his mount in midfield before gradually making progress on the outside. Once in the straight, Henri Matisse went to the front and was immediately challenged by Jim Bolger’s Mac Swiney. The pair battled it out all the way to the line, with Henri Matisse prevailing by a head. “It’s unbelievable,” said Lordan. “He’s a lovely horse and he’s only going to get better. “He’s a big, scopey horse and he’ll stay further. I think he could be a very good horse.” Henri Matisse is now likely to head to the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot next month. O’Brien said: “He’s a lovely horse and we’ve always thought a lot of him. “He won his maiden very well and then ran a blinder in the Guineas Trial. “I think he’s a horse with a lot of potential and I’m delighted with him today.”
