Mozambique’s President Praises Tanzanian Armed Forces in Counterterrorism Efforts President Filipe Nyusi of Mozambique has expressed gratitude for the crucial role played by the Tanzanian Armed Forces (TDF) in combating Islamist terrorism in the northern province of Cabo Delgado. Speaking to reporters in Dar es Salaam after meeting with his Tanzanian counterpart, Samia Suluhu, Nyusi stated that the TDF’s presence has been instrumental in preventing the advance of terrorists near the border regions with Tanzania. According to Nyusi, no Mozambican village or town is currently under terrorist control due to the combined efforts of the Mozambican Armed Forces (FDS) and the Southern African Community Development Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM), which includes a Tanzanian contingent. He commended the selfless commitment of these forces in safeguarding the country. Nyusi’s three-day visit to Tanzania coincides with Mozambique’s search for strategic support to continue the fight against jihadists following the withdrawal of SAMIM on July 15. Speaking at a joint press conference with Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan in Maputo on Tuesday, Nyusi said the Tanzanian troops had played a crucial role in stopping the terrorists and restoring peace and stability to the region. “The Tanzanian forces have been crucial in our fight against terrorism in Cabo Delgado,” Nyusi said. “They have helped us to contain the terrorists and restore peace and stability to the province.” Hassan said Tanzania was committed to continuing to support Mozambique in its fight against terrorism. “We are committed to continuing to work with Mozambique to ensure that terrorism is defeated in the region,” Hassan said. The Tanzanian forces were deployed to Mozambique in July 2021 as part of a regional force to help combat terrorism in Cabo Delgado. The force also includes troops from Rwanda and Botswana. The deployment of the regional force has helped to contain the terrorists and restore peace and stability to Cabo Delgado. However, the terrorists continue to pose a threat to the region and the regional force remains on high alert.
