Murder in East London: Husband Strangles Wife in Front of Children On April 29th, 2022, a tragic murder took place in an East London flat, claiming the life of 24-year-old Suma Begum. Her husband, 46-year-old Aminam Rahman, was convicted of her murder after a harrowing video call witnessed by the couple’s children and Ms. Begum’s boyfriend, Shahin Miah. According to the prosecution, Rahman strangled Ms. Begum in a fit of rage or jealousy, motivated by her desire to leave him and her ongoing relationship with Mr. Miah. The assault was recorded on video by Mr. Miah, who was witnessing the events remotely from the United Arab Emirates. Witness testimony and CCTV footage revealed that Rahman stuffed Ms. Begum’s body into a suitcase and disposed of it in the River Lea. Her decomposed body was discovered by a mudlarker ten days later. During the trial, Rahman admitted to killing Ms. Begum but claimed he acted in self-defense, alleging that she had threatened to kill their older child. However, the jury rejected his plea and convicted him of murder, as well as preventing the lawful burial of Ms. Begum’s body. Sentencing is scheduled for July 31st. The case serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers of domestic violence and the devastating consequences it can have on innocent lives.
