De Minaur, the 22nd seed, defeated Spain’s Jaume Munar 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and 43 minutes. The Australian fired 28 winners and converted four of his 11 break points to set up a clash with Benjamin Bonzi of France. Saville, who received a wildcard into the tournament, upset Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine 6-3, 6-4 in 81 minutes. The Australian saved all three break points she faced and converted four of her nine break point opportunities to secure the victory. She will face American Jessica Pegula in the second round. Meanwhile, Alexei Popyrin and Thanasi Kokkinakis were eliminated in the first round. Popyrin fell to Argentina’s Tomas Etcheverry 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, while Kokkinakis lost to Lucas Pouille of France 6-3, 6-3, 6-2. The remaining first-round matches will be played on Wednesday, January 18.
