Uganda’s oldest and most successful football club, SC Villa, has been selected to represent the country in the upcoming CECAFA Kagame Cup. The tournament, which will take place in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, from July 17 to August 1, brings together top clubs from the East and Central African Football Association (CECAFA) region. SC Villa earned their spot in the competition by winning the Uganda Premier League in the 2021/22 season. The Jogoos finished the campaign with 72 points, two points ahead of their nearest rivals, Vipers SC. The CECAFA Kagame Cup is one of the most prestigious club competitions in Africa, and SC Villa will be looking to make a strong impression on the continent. The club has a rich history in the tournament, having won it three times, in 1987, 2003, and 2015. SC Villa’s head coach, Petros Koukouras, is confident that his team can challenge for the title. “We have prepared well for this tournament, and we believe we have a squad capable of beating any team in CECAFA,” he said. The team will be led by experienced captain Isaac Kirabira, who has been in fine form for both club and country. Other key players include goalkeeper Meddie Kibirige, defender Edward Masembe, and midfielders Travis Mutyaba and Emmanuel Arnold. SC Villa has been drawn in Group C of the CECAFA Kagame Cup alongside Azam FC (Tanzania), Bandari FC (Kenya), and Atlabara FC (South Sudan). The Jogoos will begin their campaign against Bandari on July 18th. Uganda’s record-setting Premier League champions, Sports Club Villa, will participate in the upcoming Council of East and Central African Football Association (CECAFA) Kagame Cup for the seventh time. The tournament, originally scheduled from July 20 to August 4 in Tanzania, has been rescheduled from July 6 to 22 due to the busy CAF schedule. This adjustment ensures that participating teams can prepare for the 2024/2025 CAF Club competitions. Notably, the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup 2024 has been canceled to provide players with ample time to train and enhance their skills. Along with the local teams, the tournament will feature three guest teams: TP Mazembe (DR Congo), Nyasa Big Bullets (Malawi), and Red Arrows FC (Zambia). In the previous edition, Express Football Club emerged victorious, showcasing Uganda’s football prowess. SC Villa aims to strengthen Uganda’s legacy by claiming the trophy and elevating its status in the regional football scene. Sixteen teams will compete in the tournament, including Tanzania’s Simba SC, Kenya’s Gor Mahia FC, and other aspiring challengers. The CECAFA Kagame Cup, established in 1967, has been dominated by Tanzanian teams. However, SC Villa has had notable success, winning the title thrice in 1987, 2003, and 2005. They have also finished second three times in 1991, 1993, and 1999. The tournament fosters unity and competition within the Central and East African football community, showcasing the region’s diverse football talent and ambition.

The team has a strong track record in the CECAFA Kagame Cup, having won the tournament three times in the past. The Jogos will be led by coach Petros Koukouras, who has guided the team to success in the domestic league. The squad includes several talented players, such as goalkeeper Samson Kirya, defender Habib Kavuma, and midfielder Bobosi Byaruhanga. SC Villa will face stiff competition in the tournament, as they will be up against some of the top clubs in the region.
