West Coast Eagles Announce New Coach, Led by Former Assistant In a surprising move, the West Coast Eagles have announced the appointment of Campbell Brown as their new senior coach. Brown currently serves as an assistant coach at rival side St Kilda. Brown has a wealth of experience in the AFL, having played 250 games for the Saints and Geelong. He retired in 2017 and immediately transitioned into coaching, joining St Kilda’s coaching panel in 2018. Under Brown’s guidance, St Kilda’s defense has been one of the most improved in the league. In 2023, the Saints ranked sixth in fewest points conceded. West Coast Eagles CEO Gavin Bell praised Brown’s credentials and vision for the team. “Campbell is a proven leader with a deep understanding of the game and a clear plan for success,” Bell said. “His ability to develop young players and his commitment to a high-performance culture were key factors in our decision.” Brown expressed his excitement about the opportunity to coach the Eagles. “I’m incredibly honored to be appointed as the coach of the West Coast Eagles,” Brown said. “This is a proud club with a rich history, and I’m determined to lead this team back to success.” Brown’s first assignment will be to replace outgoing coach Adam Simpson, who announced his resignation earlier this year. The Eagles missed the finals in 2023, finishing 15th on the ladder. Brown is expected to bring a fresh perspective and a new approach to the Eagles. His appointment sends a strong message that the club is committed to rebuilding and returning to the top of the AFL ladder.Dean Cox will replace Adam Simpson as West Coast Eagles head coach in 2025, according to former American League player Campbell Brown. Assistant Jarrad Schofield will serve as interim coach until then. Cox, who played 290 games for West Coast, is currently an assistant coach at the Sydney Swans. He had previously ruled out becoming West Coast coach, but that was before Simpson’s departure. Another possible replacement for Simpson is Ash Hansen, but the club wants Simpson to coach one final game against the Brisbane Lions in Perth on Sunday. Simpson, who won the 2018 championship, has not yet decided whether he will coach that game. He said that “a decision has been made (to change coaches) and it’s mutual.” “I feel it’s the right time,” Simpson said. “I’ve been quite stoic over the last few years about the direction of the club. It’s a slow process, it will take a bit of time. Someone else will come in now, a bit like when I replaced Woosha (John Worsfold) at the end of 2013. Someone will come in with energy and will be able to grow with the group.” Don Pyke, West Coast’s chief executive, ruled out taking over from Simpson. He will instead play a key role in choosing the right person for the job. Former West Coast forward Hansen is currently an assistant at Carlton, but Cox is thought to be the favorite. Interim coach Schofield and Fremantle assistant Jaymie Graham are other potential candidates. “We’ll do as much research as possible to find the best person,” Pyke said. “We’ll put together a list of people to approach and start talking about how to lead the club in the future.” “I know people will start to speculate who it will be. We have an opportunity with a group of players that we think is on the rise to find someone who has that energy, drive and passion to take the group where we want to go. He (Cox) will certainly be a name we would consider.”Assistant coach Adam Simpson will become the next coach of the West Coast Eagles, replacing the outgoing John Worsfold. Simpson, 42, has been an assistant coach at the Eagles’ arch-rivals, the North Melbourne Kangaroos, for the past three seasons. He has a strong track record in player development and is seen as a rising star in the coaching ranks. Simpson played 307 games for North Melbourne and the Kangaroos, and was a member of the Kangaroos’ 1999 premiership team. He retired from playing in 2010 and joined the Kangaroos’ coaching staff the following year. Simpson’s appointment is seen as a coup for the Eagles, who have been searching for a new coach since Worsfold announced his resignation in August. Simpson is expected to be formally unveiled as the Eagles’ new coach at a press conference on Tuesday.
