Statement by HE Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, IGAD Executive Secretary Opening of the Preparatory Meeting for the Sudan All-Inclusive Political Dialogue Wednesday, 10th July 2024, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia Excellencies, Distinguished Representatives of the Government of Sudan, Members of the International Community, Civil Society Organizations, Ladies and Gentlemen, It is with great honor and a profound sense of responsibility that I address this distinguished gathering today on the occasion of the opening of the Preparatory Meeting for the Sudan All-Inclusive Political Dialogue. On behalf of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), I would like to extend a warm welcome to all participants and express our sincere appreciation to the Government of Ethiopia for hosting this important event. The Sudan All-Inclusive Political Dialogue is a historic opportunity for the people of Sudan to chart a new path towards peace and prosperity for their country. The eyes of the region and the world are upon us as we embark on this crucial endeavor. As the guarantor of the 2020 Juba Peace Agreement, IGAD remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting an inclusive and credible political dialogue that brings all stakeholders to the table. We believe that a broad-based consensus is essential for Sudan to overcome its challenges and build a democratic and stable future. Over the past months, IGAD has engaged extensively with Sudanese stakeholders to facilitate the preparatory process. We have listened attentively to their concerns and perspectives, and we have worked tirelessly to create an environment conducive to constructive dialogue. The preparatory meeting today is a vital step in paving the way for the main dialogue. It provides an opportunity for participants to agree on the modalities, agenda, and timeframe for the dialogue. We urge all parties to engage in good faith and work together to ensure a successful process. We recognize that the road ahead will not be without challenges. However, we must approach this dialogue with determination and an unwavering commitment to the future of Sudan. We call on the international community to support the dialogue and to provide the necessary resources and assistance to ensure its success. The international community has a vital role to play in helping Sudan achieve lasting peace and stability. We also appeal to all Sudanese stakeholders to put aside their differences and join hands in this historic endeavor. The future of Sudan depends on your willingness to compromise and work together for the common good. Let us all work together to make this dialogue a success, to create a just and equitable future for all Sudanese people, and to ensure that Sudan takes its rightful place as a pillar of peace and prosperity in the region. The meeting was attended by representatives from the Transitional Military Council (TMC), opposition groups, civil society organizations, the African Union, the United Nations, and international partners. Speaking at the opening of the meeting, IGAD Executive Secretary Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu emphasized the importance of Sudan’s transition to democracy. “Sudan has undergone a profound transformation, and it is now more than ever critical for all stakeholders to come together and engage in a constructive dialogue that will pave the way for a peaceful and stable future,” Dr. Gebeyehu said. The preparatory meeting aimed to establish the principles, modalities, and timetable for the all-inclusive political dialogue. Participants discussed key issues such as the representation of various groups, the inclusion of women and youth, and the role of mediators. Dr. Gebeyehu urged the stakeholders to engage in a spirit of compromise and collaboration. “The future of Sudan depends on the ability of all parties to put aside their differences and work together for the common good,” he said. The preparatory meeting will conclude on Thursday, and the all-inclusive political dialogue is expected to commence shortly after. IGAD will continue to play a facilitating role in the process, working in close coordination with other stakeholders. The political dialogue is seen as a crucial step towards resolving the ongoing crisis in Sudan and establishing a democratic and inclusive government that represents the aspirations of the Sudanese people.
