USAID Renovates Mekelle’s Library and Youth Center, Fostering Dialogue and Inclusion The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has completed the renovation of the Mekelle Public Library and Youth Center, providing a modern and welcoming space for young people from diverse backgrounds to engage in dialogue and foster mutual understanding. The upgraded facility features a spacious reading area with a vast collection of books, computers with internet access, and comfortable seating. It also includes a dedicated youth center with a multipurpose hall, an art studio, and a computer lab. Recognizing the importance of open dialogue and inclusion, USAID designed the renovated center to be a safe and inviting environment for youth. The space is free of political or religious affiliation, allowing people of different perspectives to interact respectfully. “This facility is not just a library or a youth center; it’s a space where young people can come together to share ideas, learn from each other, and build bridges across their differences,” said USAID Mission Director in Ethiopia Sean Jones. The center has already begun hosting a range of programs and activities aimed at promoting dialogue and understanding. These include youth clubs, book discussions, workshops on civic engagement, and art exhibitions showcasing diversity. “I’m so grateful for this space,” said 16-year-old student Azeb Teklue. “It’s a place where I can meet people from other communities and talk about our experiences without fear of judgment.” The renovation is part of USAID’s broader efforts to support youth development and peacebuilding in Ethiopia. By providing a platform for dialogue and understanding, the Mekelle Public Library and Youth Center aims to contribute to a more inclusive and peaceful society. As USAID Administrator Samantha Power stated, “Building peace means investing in the future – in the young people who will shape their societies. That’s why we’re proud to support this center, where youth can engage in dialogue, learn about diversity, and build the skills they need to create a more inclusive and prosperous future for Ethiopia.”Illegal Dumping Lands Men with Hefty FineIllegal Dumping Lands Men with Hefty Fine Two individuals have been slapped with a hefty fine of $17,000 for illegally dumping expired food at the entrance of a charity shop in western Sydney. The illicit activities were first captured on camera in February, showing the pair disposing of approximately 40 boxes of expired Cheetos Puff snacks outside the Salvation Army store in Chester Hill. An investigation by the local council revealed that the products had expired the previous year, leading to a $2,000 fine for transporting the excess waste to an unauthorized disposal facility. Undeterred, the same driver returned to the store with an accomplice in May, this time unloading 60 boxes of expired yogurt sauces. The council promptly intervened, imposing a $15,000 fine for this second offense. Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Bilal El-Hayek expressed outrage over the brazen act, emphasizing the dire consequences of providing expired products to organizations dedicated to helping the needy. “They have no shame,” he said. Lifeline’s General Manager of Commercial Operations, Mark Jeffery, highlighted the growing problem of waste management and rising landfill fees for charities, which often have to bear the brunt of such illegal dumping. In April, local governments across the state were granted increased powers to tackle illegal dumping, including hefty fines ranging from $15,000 to $75,000. “Fines have changed dramatically,” said Mayor El-Hayek. “We hope this will deter people.” Additionally, a new state government grant will enable councils to install security cameras at litter hotspots to apprehend perpetrators. Residents are encouraged to report any instances of illegal dumping to City Hall by calling 9707 9000.The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has renovated a library and youth center in Mekelle, Ethiopia, to foster dialogue and promote understanding among youth from diverse backgrounds. The renovated facilities provide a safe and inclusive space where Ethiopian youth can access books, educational resources, life skills training, and recreational activities. The library and youth center aim to engage youth in positive and productive ways while creating opportunities for them to interact with peers from different ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds. “This renovation demonstrates USAID’s commitment to investing in the future of Ethiopia by supporting young people and empowering them to contribute to their communities,” said USAID Mission Director Sean Jones. The renovation included modernizing the library with new books, computers, and internet access, as well as creating a dedicated space for youth to hold discussions, workshops, and events. The youth center was also upgraded with sports facilities, a computer lab, and a counseling room. USAID worked closely with local partners, including Mekelle University and the Regional Bureau of Education, to design and implement the renovation. The facilities are expected to be a hub for youth engagement, promoting dialogue, tolerance, and mutual understanding. The renovation is part of USAID’s broader effort to support youth development in Ethiopia. USAID provides funding for programs that focus on education, employment, and health, as well as efforts to address youth unemployment and promote social inclusion. These investments are critical to ensuring that Ethiopia’s youth have the skills and opportunities they need to succeed and contribute to the country’s development.
