Penrith Panthers Acquire Kepaoa From Wests Tigers to Provide Cover for Reed May
The Penrith Panthers have bolstered their squad with the signing of utility Jack Kepaoa from the Wests Tigers on a one-year deal. The move comes as the Panthers seek to provide cover for injured halfback Reed May. Kepaoa, 24, made his NRL debut for the Tigers in 2018 and has played 60 games in the top grade. He can play at both halfback and fullback, offering versatility to Ivan Cleary’s team. “Jack is a quality player who will add depth to our squad,” Panthers general manager Matt Cameron said. “He has shown his ability to play at NRL level and we believe he can contribute to our success.” May has been ruled out for an extended period after undergoing shoulder surgery. His absence has left a void in the Panthers’ lineup, with Nathan Cleary the only recognized halfback in the squad. The acquisition of Kepaoa will provide the Panthers with much-needed cover. He is expected to compete with Jaeman Salmon for the halfback spot in May’s absence. “I’m really excited to join the Panthers,” Kepaoa said. “It’s a successful club with a great culture, and I’m looking forward to contributing to the team.” The Panthers are currently sitting in second place on the NRL ladder and are considered one of the favorites to win the premiership. The signing of Kepaoa will further strengthen their squad and enhance their chances of success.Panthers Acquire Kepaoa, Release Lisati
Panthers Acquire Kepaoa, Release Lisati
Penrith Panthers have bolstered their outside back options by signing Asu Kepaoa from Wests Tigers on an 18-month deal. The move comes as the Panthers seek cover for Taylan May, who is currently stood down under the NRL’s no-fault policy amidst domestic violence charges. As part of a multi-club switch, Penrith has also released forward Ativalu Lisati to Melbourne Storm for the remainder of 2024 and all of 2025.
Kepaoa’s Addition
Kepaoa’s signing provides much-needed depth for the Panthers, particularly in the center position where Paul Alamoti has filled in for May in recent weeks. The New Zealander has scored 13 tries in 43 games for Wests Tigers since joining them in 2020. Notably, he has versatility and can also play in a bench or second-row role if required.
May’s Future Uncertain
May’s future with the Panthers remains in doubt, with settlement figures being discussed for his immediate exit. However, no decision has yet been reached. May is currently unable to play due to the ongoing court case and will not be available until the finalization of the matter. His next hearing is scheduled for March 2025. Despite some coverage in their backline, the Panthers are keen on further strengthening their depth, hence the acquisition of Kepaoa. Brothers Jesse and Casey McLean are other promising young talents in contention for selection, having been named in the NSW U19 State of Origin side this week.Penrith Panthers have signed Wests Tigers backrower Kelma Tuilagi on a one-year deal as injury cover for Scott May. May is expected to miss the start of the 2023 NRL season after undergoing shoulder surgery last month. Tuilagi, 21, made 12 appearances for the Tigers last year and is a former Junior Kangaroo. He will join the Panthers on a train-and-trial deal before officially joining the club on November 1. “Kelma is a young and promising player who we believe has the potential to be a valuable addition to our squad,” Panthers football manager Matt Cameron said. “He is a strong ball-carrier and tackler who will provide us with some much-needed depth in the back row. “We are looking forward to seeing what he can bring to the club.”
