Toledo’s Mud Hens Announce Managerial ShakeupToledo’s Mud Hens Announce Managerial Shakeup The Toledo Mud Hens, the Triple-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, have announced a significant shakeup in their managerial staff. Effective immediately, manager Doug Mientkiewicz has been relieved of his duties. Assistant coach and former Mud Hens manager Tom Nieto has been named the interim manager for the remainder of the 2023 season. “This decision was not made lightly,” said Mud Hens Vice President and General Manager Erik Ibsen. “We appreciate Doug’s hard work and dedication to the Mud Hens over the past two seasons, but we believe this change is necessary to move the team in a positive direction.” Under Mientkiewicz’s guidance, the Mud Hens had a 78-84 record in 2022 and currently sit at 29-29 this season. The team has struggled with consistency and has not posted a winning record since 2019. Nieto, who managed the Mud Hens from 2016 to 2019, brings a wealth of experience to the role. He led the team to a division title and a trip to the Triple-A National Championship Game in 2017. “Tom has a proven track record of success with the Mud Hens,” said Ibsen. “We believe he can provide the necessary leadership and guidance to help us turn the season around and contend for a playoff spot.” The Mud Hens will resume their season on Tuesday, June 20, with a road game against the Columbus Clippers. Nieto will make his managerial debut for the team. “I’m excited to be back with the Mud Hens,” said Nieto. “I’m confident that we have the talent and the determination to make a run at the postseason.”
