Under the cloak of darkness, the cemetery transforms into a magical realm. Guided by lantern-bearing hosts, visitors embark on a captivating journey through the shadowy paths. As they traverse the moonlit grounds, guests witness the brilliance of newly installed LED lighting illuminating the intricate sculptures, towering oaks, and sprawling live oaks. The soft glow brings to life the stories etched into the tombstones, revealing the lives and secrets of those who rest beneath. The tour highlights the cemetery’s most famous resident, Conrad Aiken, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning poem “And in the Hanging Gardens.” Visitors will see his grave, adorned with an ivy wreath, as they learn about the enigmatic writer’s connection to the cemetery. Other notable burials include Johnny Mercer, the lyricist behind “Moon River,” and poet Eliza Lucas Pinckney. Their gravesites become poignant beacons of cultural heritage under the ambient lighting. Throughout the tour, guests will hear chilling tales of ghostly encounters, unsolved mysteries, and love stories lost to time.
