Knoxville Tightens Noise Ordinance to Curb Excessive Noise PollutionKnoxville Tightens Noise Ordinance to Curb Excessive Noise Pollution Knoxville City Council has passed a stricter noise ordinance aimed at mitigating excessive noise levels that have become a growing concern for residents. The ordinance takes effect immediately. The new ordinance lowers the allowable noise level in residential areas from 55 decibels (dB) to 50 dB during the daytime (7 a.m. to 10 p.m.) and from 45 dB to 40 dB during the nighttime (10 p.m. to 7 a.m.). Additionally, the ordinance: * Prohibits construction activities in residential areas between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. * Limits the use of amplified sound equipment, such as boomboxes and loudspeakers, to specific areas and hours. * Sets stricter penalties for violations, including fines and potential confiscation of noise-making devices. “This ordinance is a necessary step to ensure the peace and tranquility of our neighborhoods,” said Mayor Indya Kincannon. “Excessive noise can be intrusive, disruptive, and harmful to our health and well-being.” City officials have emphasized the importance of community cooperation in enforcing the new noise ordinance. Residents are encouraged to report violations to the Knoxville Police Department. “We urge citizens to be mindful of their noise levels and to respect the rights of their neighbors,” said Police Chief Paul Noel. “By working together, we can create a more livable and peaceful city for all.” The stricter noise ordinance is part of a broader effort by the city to address noise pollution. In recent years, Knoxville has implemented noise monitoring programs and established sound barriers along major roads to mitigate traffic noise. The passage of the new ordinance represents a significant step forward in the city’s efforts to enhance the quality of life for its residents. By prohibiting excessive noise, Knoxville aims to create a more harmonious and enjoyable environment for all.
