Carberry Crash Anniversary: Investigation Update and Impact on First Responders As the one-year anniversary of the tragic Carberry crash approaches, the Manitoba RCMP provided an update on the investigation’s progress and the well-being of first responders. On June 15, 2023, a bus carrying 25 people encountered a truck at the intersection of Highway 5 and the Trans-Canada Highway, resulting in the loss of 17 lives. Supt. Rob Lasson, speaking to reporters, recalled his earlier commitment to provide thorough and accurate information. He confirmed that the investigation has collected sufficient evidence for potential charges to be laid. Lasson highlighted the challenges faced in speaking to the bus driver, whose medical condition prevented communication. However, the semi-conductor was previously determined to have had the right of way. The investigation was described as complex and time-consuming due to its unique nature. “We needed to get this right, and I’m sure we did,” said Lasson. Regarding the impact on first responders, Lasson emphasized the enduring nature of the tragedy. “This is unimaginable… even for officers who have seen many tragic scenes,” he stated. Most of the officers involved have returned to work in some capacity, receiving support from RCMP programs. A memorial for the victims will be unveiled in Dauphin on June 15, 2024, with the attendance of officers who responded to the crash. “It will be sad, very emotional… police officers are people too,” said Lasson. He extended condolences to the affected families and acknowledged their understanding and assistance throughout the investigation.
