Alcatraz Island Reopens for Public ToursAlcatraz Island Reopens for Public Tours After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Alcatraz Island, the infamous former federal prison, has reopened to the public for guided tours. Beginning April 28th, visitors can once again step inside the hallowed halls of “The Rock” and explore its notorious past. Tours will showcase the prison’s history, its famous inmates, and its unique architecture. Exploring the Infamous Prison Visitors will be taken on a guided tour of the complex, including the cellhouse, the dining hall, the recreation yard, and the lighthouse. They will learn about the infamous inmates who called Alcatraz home, such as Al Capone, Robert Stroud, and Whitey Bulger. The tour also highlights the prison’s unique architecture. Built on a small island in San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz was designed to be an inescapable fortress. Its thick walls, barred windows, and strategic location made it one of the most secure prisons in the world. Historical Significance Alcatraz has a long and fascinating history. It was used as a military fort, a prison for Native Americans, and finally, a federal penitentiary from 1934 to 1963. The prison closed after a series of riots and allegations of abuse. In 1973, Alcatraz was declared a National Historic Landmark and opened to the public as a museum. Since then, it has become one of San Francisco’s most popular tourist destinations. Tour Details Guided tours of Alcatraz are available daily, with departures from Pier 33 on the Embarcadero in San Francisco. Visitors can choose from two tour options: a Day Tour (9:00 AM – 4:00 PM) or a Night Tour (6:45 PM – 9:45 PM). Tickets must be purchased in advance and can be booked through the National Park Service website or authorized ticket vendors. Visitors are encouraged to book their tours as early as possible, as they tend to sell out quickly. Safety Protocols To ensure the safety of visitors and staff, Alcatraz Island has implemented several COVID-19 safety protocols. All visitors over the age of 2 must provide proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test taken within the past 72 hours. Masks are required inside all buildings on the island, and social distancing measures are in place.
