Lucy Letby Did Not Intervene When Baby Fell Ill, Court Told During a trial at Manchester Crown Court, prosecutors alleged that former neonatal nurse Lucy Letby did not intervene when a baby fell seriously ill, despite her being present at the time. The court heard that the baby, known as Baby A, was born premature at Countess of Chester Hospital in September 2015. A few hours after birth, the baby’s condition deteriorated rapidly. According to the prosecution, Letby was present when Baby A’s heart rate dropped and the baby became unresponsive. However, Letby allegedly did not take any action to assist the baby, even though she was the most experienced nurse on duty. As a result of the delay in intervention, Baby A suffered a severe brain injury that left him with permanent disabilities. The prosecution’s expert witness, Dr. Dewi Evans, testified that Baby A’s condition could have been treated effectively if Letby had intervened promptly. He said that the baby’s collapse was “sudden and unexpected,” and that Letby had “a duty of care” to the baby. However, Letby’s defense team argued that Baby A’s collapse was not a medical emergency and that Letby had no reason to suspect that the baby’s condition was deteriorating. They also said that Letby was not the primary nurse responsible for Baby A at the time of the incident. The trial is ongoing, and Letby denies all charges against her. She is accused of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder ten others at the Countess of Chester Hospital between 2015 and 2016.According to Statistics Canada, Canada’s population has surpassed 41 million people as of April 1, 2024. This represents a growth of 0.6% or 242,673 people in the first quarter of the year. The increase is primarily attributed to immigration, with Canada welcoming 121,758 immigrants during the period. Net emigration (the number of people leaving Canada minus the number entering) also contributed, with a net loss of 12,613 people. Canada’s population also saw an increase of 131,810 non-permanent residents, primarily due to growth in temporary immigration. Notably, this growth occurred before the announcement of limits on the number of permits issued to non-permanent residents in 2024. This report highlights Canada’s continued population growth driven by immigration and temporary residency programs.A court has heard that nurse Lucy Letby did not intervene when a baby fell ill at the Countess of Chester Hospital. The prosecution alleges that Letby murdered seven babies and attempted to murder 10 others while working on the neonatal unit between June 2015 and June 2016. On Friday, the jury was told that Letby was present when Baby E began to deteriorate on the evening of June 11, 2015. The baby’s oxygen levels had dropped and her heart rate had slowed, but Letby did not call for help or give the baby oxygen. Instead, she allegedly “stood back and watched” as the baby’s condition worsened. Baby E eventually went into cardiac arrest and had to be resuscitated. She survived but was left with permanent brain damage. Letby denies all the charges against her. The trial continues.
