Unexploded World War II Relic Removed from Ang Mo Kio Construction Site SINGAPORE – An unexploded World War II mortar shell was safely removed from a construction site in Ang Mo Kio on Tuesday (Sept 20). The Singapore Police Force (SPF) said it was alerted to the discovery of the relic at about 8.30am at the worksite located along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was activated and arrived at the scene at about 9.30am. The EOD team assessed the relic and determined that it was a 3-inch mortar shell. The mortar shell was then safely removed from the site and disposed of. The SPF said there were no injuries or damage to property. The discovery of the mortar shell is a reminder of the city-state’s wartime past. Singapore was occupied by the Japanese from 1942 to 1945 during World War II. The EOD team is regularly called out to deal with unexploded ordnance from the war, which can still be found in Singapore. In 2021, the EOD team responded to 106 cases involving unexploded ordnance. The majority of these cases involved artillery shells, hand grenades and mortar shells. The SPF advises the public to report any suspected unexploded ordnance to the police immediately. The public should not attempt to handle or move the ordnance themselves, as it can be dangerous. An unexploded World War II ordnance was safely removed from a construction site in Singapore on June 28th. The relic was discovered during excavation work for the future Teck Ghee MRT station. Police and the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) determined that the ordnance was safe to handle and removed it for disposal. It posed no danger to the public. This is not the first time that unexploded war relics have been found in Singapore. In September 2018, a 100kg aerial bomb was discovered at the construction site of the Myst condo in Upper Bukit Timah. The bomb was safely disposed of by the SAF bomb disposal team. Experts say that it is not surprising to find unexploded war relics in Singapore, as bombing raids during World War II were “very inaccurate.” The Teck Ghee MRT station will be an underground station along Phase 1 of the Cross Island Line. Construction of this phase of the project began in January 2023.An unexploded World War II relic, discovered at a construction site in Ang Mo Kio, has been safely removed. The 17-inch naval shell was found on Tuesday (June 13) during excavation works at the construction site of a new hospital at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8. The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Explosives Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was activated and deployed to the site to conduct a thorough inspection. The team confirmed that the relic was an unexploded shell, potentially dating back to the Japanese Occupation during World War II. The area around the construction site was cordoned off as a precautionary measure. The EOD team then carefully extracted the shell and transported it to a safe location for further disposal. The SAF EOD team regularly conducts such operations to ensure public safety and remove any potential hazards posed by unexploded WWII-era munitions. Members of the public are advised to be cautious when encountering any suspicious objects that may resemble unexploded ordnance. They should immediately report such findings to the police or the SAF EOD hotline at 1800-7236393.
