Burora Detained for Hate Speech Former Deputy Head of the Regional Coordination Council (RCC), Emmanuel Burora, was taken into preventive custody on charges of spreading hate speech. The arrest stems from a series of public statements allegedly inciting violence and division among citizens. According to law enforcement officials, Burora’s remarks were made during a political rally and via social media. They are said to have targeted specific ethnic groups and promoted intolerance. The arrest has sparked widespread condemnation from human rights organizations and civil society groups. They accuse the authorities of suppressing dissent and targeting political opponents. At a press conference, the Attorney General stated that Burora’s actions had violated national laws prohibiting hate speech and incitement to violence. He emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting citizens from discrimination and division. Burora’s lawyer, however, maintains his client’s innocence and claims the charges are politically motivated. He argues that Burora’s statements were taken out of context and do not constitute hate speech. The case has deepened tensions within the country, with supporters of Burora calling for his release and critics demanding accountability for his actions. The trial is scheduled to begin in the coming weeks, and the outcome is expected to have significant implications for freedom of expression and political stability in the country. Meanwhile, human rights groups continue to monitor the situation closely and call for due process to be followed and the rights of all parties to be respected.Former RCC Deputy Remanded for Hate SpeechFormer RCC Deputy Remanded for Hate Speech Kampala, Uganda – Anderson Herbert Burora, the former Deputy Resident Commissioner of Rubaga Division, has been remanded to Luzira prison on charges of hate speech and malicious disinformation. Burora was arraigned before Buganda Road Magistrate’s Court on July 3, 2024, and pleaded not guilty to the charges. The prosecution alleged that Burora, using his social media account, shared information intended to ridicule and degrade Parliament Speaker Annet Anita Among and spread malicious information about her. Burora’s defense team argued that the charges were flawed as they did not specify the specific statements that constituted hate speech or malicious information. They also requested his release on bail. However, Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi ruled that it was necessary to resolve the legality of the charge before proceeding and remanded Burora in custody until July 9, 2024. Burora’s arrest and remand follow allegations of corruption against the House Speaker, which he posted on social media. He was suspended on March 14, 2024, and later resigned on March 18, citing his conscience. This case is similar to that of TikToker Ibrahim Musana, also known as Pressure 24/7, who was remanded for promoting hate speech against President Museveni and the Kabaka of Buganda before being released.
