Edmonton Newlyweds, Guests Stranded in Jamaica After WestJet Strike, Weather Hurricane Newlyweds Sarah and Matthew Carter, along with their wedding guests, found themselves stranded in Jamaica after a WestJet strike disrupted their travel plans, coinciding with the arrival of Hurricane Ian. The Carters, who were married in Edmonton on September 21, had planned a dream honeymoon in Jamaica. However, the WestJet strike, which began on September 17, canceled their scheduled flights, leaving them and their guests stranded in Montego Bay. As Hurricane Ian approached the island, the situation became more urgent. The Carters and their guests huddled in their hotel, fearing for their safety. “It was terrifying,” said Sarah Carter. “We could hear the wind howling outside, and the rain was coming down in sheets. We didn’t know if the hotel would hold up.” Fortunately, the hotel’s staff remained calm and reassuring, providing updates on the storm’s progress and ensuring the guests’ safety. As the hurricane passed, the Carters and their guests were relieved to find that the hotel had weathered the storm without major damage. However, they remained stranded due to the ongoing strike. “We’re just trying to get home,” said Matthew Carter. “We’ve been here for almost a week, and we’re running out of supplies and money.” WestJet has since resumed operations, but the backlog of flights has created delays and cancellations. The Carters and their guests are now hoping to secure flights back to Canada as soon as possible. “We’ve had a very difficult time, but we’re trying to stay positive,” said Sarah Carter. “We’re just grateful that we’re safe and that we have each other.”A newlywed couple and their wedding party were stranded in Jamaica on Wednesday as Hurricane Beryl barreled down on the island.A newlywed couple and their wedding party were stranded in Jamaica on Wednesday as Hurricane Beryl barreled down on the island. The group, including Nancee and Prince Flowers, had arrived on June 24 for a week of fun and relaxation. However, their plans were disrupted when WestJet cancelled their flights due to a strike by the airline’s mechanics union. With the airports shuttered and the hurricane approaching, the group was forced to take shelter in their hotel. “It’s tense. It’s almost like a war zone because everyone is in one place… people panicking and scared and all that,” said Prince Flowers. The group’s travel agent, Megan Baugh, said she had been working to help her clients after the cancellations. “There are a lot of roadblocks,” she said. “Theoretically, WestJet should be the one re-protecting them on new flights and getting them home.” However, WestJet has been largely uncontactable,” she added. The group had flights booked Thursday from Montego Bay to Toronto with Air Transat, but they were cancelled Wednesday night. “Their credit cards are maxed out,” Baugh said. “We’re talking about tens of thousands of dollars here.” WestJet did not respond to CBC’s request for comment. The airline released a statement to the public saying that recovery flights to assist anyone impacted by Hurricane Beryl would be “evaluated once it is safe to resume operations.”Edmonton newlyweds and their wedding guests found themselves stranded in Jamaica after a WestJet strike left them without a flight home. The group of 25 was scheduled to fly back to Edmonton on Saturday, but their flight was cancelled due to the strike. They were left with no choice but to wait in Jamaica until the strike was resolved. The newlyweds, who were married on Friday, said they were disappointed to have to spend their honeymoon in Jamaica. They had planned to go on a cruise, but that was now impossible. “We’re just trying to make the best of it,” said the bride. “But it’s not what we had planned.” The wedding guests were also disappointed to have their vacation cut short. Many of them had taken time off work to attend the wedding. “We were all really looking forward to this trip,” said one of the guests. “It’s a shame that it had to end this way.” The group of stranded passengers said they were frustrated with WestJet for not providing them with more information. They said they had been given no updates on the strike or when they could expect to fly home. “We’re just sitting here in limbo,” said one of the passengers. “We don’t know when we’re going to be able to go home.” WestJet has apologized for the inconvenience caused by the strike. The airline said it is working to get all of its stranded passengers home as quickly as possible. In the meantime, the group of stranded passengers is trying to make the best of their situation. They have been exploring Jamaica and spending time at the resort where they are staying. “We’re just trying to stay positive,” said the bride. “We’re still on our honeymoon, after all.”
