The+regional+bloc+is+taking+stock+of+developments+in+its+industrial+sectors+and+ahead+of+the+upcoming+SADC+Seventh+Industrialization+Week+in+August,+Permanent+Secretary+for+Industry+and+Trade+Dr+Thomas+Utete+Wushe+said+in+an+interview+that+have+made+significant+progress.

“We+have+witnessed+a+strong+focus+on+value+chain+development+in+key+sectors+such+as+agro-processing,+pharmaceuticals,+mineral+beneficiation,+consumer+goods,+capital+goods,+financial+and+infrastructure+sectors,”+he+said.+.

“Within+these,+there+has+been+a+growing+emphasis+on+innovation+and+regional+collaboration.

“Here+in+Zimbabwe,+we+are+excited+to+host+the+upcoming+seventh+SADC+Industrialization+Week,+which+will+be+a+great+platform+to+showcase+these+achievements+and+discuss+the+exciting+opportunities+that+lie+ahead+for+a+truly+industrialized+region.”

Dr+Utete+Wushe+said+that+when+Zimbabwe+assumed+the+SADC+presidency+in+2014,+the+country+was+instrumental+in+advancing+the+industrialization+pillar,+resulting+in+the+high-level+adoption+of+the+industrialization+strategy+by+of+SADC+Heads+of+State.

“Basically,+the+strategy+seeks+to+promote+the+structural+transformation+of+the+SADC+economies.+We+are+ready+to+assume+the+SADC+presidency+again+this+year.+On+the+sidelines,+we+have+a+specific+event+on+industrialization,+and+this+will+be+the+seventh+event+since+its+inception+.,+SADC+Industrialization+Week,+and+will+be+celebrated+under+the+theme:+Promoting+innovation+to+unlock+sustainable+economic+growth+opportunities+towards+an+industrialized+SADC.”

For+its+part,+Zimbabwe’s+industry+has+surpassed+its+goal+of+having+an+$8+billion+industrial+and+commercial+sector,+as+the+Second+Republic’s+industrialization+efforts+continue+to+bear+fruit.

Achieving+such+a+feat+will+enable+a+more+robust+industrial+and+commercial+sector,+which+is+vital+for+import+substitution+and+a+key+component+of+the+Government’s+vision+of+creating+an+upper+middle+class+economy+by+2030.

Dr+Utete+Wushe+said+the+sector+will+continue+to+experience+significant+growth,+due+to+increased+investments+and+improved+value+addition+and+profit+by+companies,+among+other+things.

“Following+strong+engagement+with+the+private+sector+in+2018,+we+developed+the+industrial+and+commercial+sector+roadmap+(2018-2023),”+he+said.

The+roadmap+aimed+to+increase+the+sector’s+growth+to+an+$8+billion+industry+by+2023,+from+a+$6+billion+industry.

“I+am+pleased+to+say+that+we+have+successfully+achieved+and+exceeded+our+target.+I+will+not+hesitate+to+say+that+we+will+continue+to+witness+significant+growth+in+these+sectors+due+to+new+investments,+improved+value+addition+and+profit+by+companies,+openness+of+new+companies,+resuscitation+of+closed+ones+and+expansion+of+existing+companies”.

Dr+Utete+Wushe+said+the+main+contributors+to+GDP+growth+from+the+manufacturing+and+commercial+sector+included+food+and+beverages,+tobacco,+cotton+and+leather,+timber,+furniture,+pharmaceuticals,+paper+and+packaging.

Metals,+electricity,+the+automobile+industry,+and+retail+and+wholesale+trade+also+contributed+greatly.

Dr+Utete+Wushe+said+the+capacity+utilization+of+the+manufacturing+sector+has+been+on+an+upward+trend+in+recent+years+and+is+currently+at+53.2+per+cent.
