The fleeing gunmen also shot a passerby at a checkpoint at Ama-John junction, Akabo, along the Owerri-Okigwe-Enugu highway. According to witness accounts, the gunmen attacked the officers by surprise in the early hours of Tuesday. The officers were reportedly conducting stop-and-search operations when they were ambushed. One witness stated, “This morning, there was panic around 6:00 am along the Owerri-Okigwe-Enugu road when gunmen killed two policemen on duty and a passerby. The gunmen were traveling in a Sienna bus and drove away after shooting at the officers.” ASP Henry Okoye, the spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, confirmed the incident. He noted that Commissioner of Police Aboki Danjuma had deployed the Special Tactical Squad to apprehend the perpetrators. Okoye stated, “The Commissioner of Imo State Police Command, CP Aboki Danjuma, has deployed the Special Tactical Squad of the Command… to take drastic measures against the hoodlums responsible for the unprovoked and unjustified attack and murder of Mobile Police officers… in Akabo… in Imo State.” The tragic incident is believed to be the work of suspected members of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate, Eastern Security Network (ESN). Two police officers and one civilian were fatally injured in the attack. CP Aboki Danjuma, along with the DC of Operations, visited the crime scene for an on-spot assessment. An investigation team has been set up to uncover the perpetrators of the attack.
