In the ongoing trial of former nurse Lucy Letby, the defendant has claimed to have no recollection of a specific incident involving a young patient who suffered a near-fatal collapse. According to the prosecution, Letby allegedly injected a three-year-old girl with insulin, causing her to suffer a severe hypoglycemic episode. The incident occurred at the Countess of Chester Hospital in England in June 2015. However, when questioned in court, Letby stated that she had no memory of the event. “I don’t remember anything about that,” she told the jury. The prosecution presented medical records indicating that the girl’s blood sugar levels dropped dangerously low after Letby’s shift began. The records also showed that Letby had been the only nurse in the room with the girl at the time of the collapse. Despite the evidence, Letby maintained her innocence, saying that she would never intentionally harm a child. The jury is tasked with determining whether or not Letby’s lack of memory is genuine. The prosecution contends that her amnesia is a convenient way to avoid accountability, while the defense argues that it is a genuine medical condition. Jurors were told that on the night of 12 September 2015, Child I was found unresponsive and “blue-grey in colour” in her cot by nursing staff. Prosecutor Nick Johnson KC said Child I “had an unexplained collapse and cardiac arrest within a few hours of the defendant being assigned as her dedicated nurse”. The court heard that Letby, of Arran Avenue, Hereford, was allegedly the last person to handle Child I before she suffered the collapse. Mr Johnson said Letby told police in an interview that she “did not remember” Child I and that she “could not recall being assigned as her dedicated nurse”. The prosecutor said: “She did, however, remember there had been an incident on the night in question and that she had been present when Child I collapsed and was resuscitated.” The court heard that Child I was taken to the neonatal unit at Liverpool Women’s Hospital, where she recovered. Mr Johnson said Child I’s collapse was “of concern” to the medical team at the Countess of Chester Hospital and was recorded as “an unexplained sentinel event”. The trial continues.
