Mai TT in Court: ZimEye Reports Prominent Zimbabwean socialite and businesswoman, Felistas Murata, popularly known as Mai TT, appeared in court on Monday, facing charges of fraud. According to ZimEye, Mai TT is alleged to have swindled US$42,000 from businesswoman Lydia Sibanda. Sibanda claimed that she had paid Mai TT for a consignment of goods, but the goods were never delivered. The State alleges that Mai TT forged a receipt to cover up the alleged fraud. She has pleaded not guilty to the charges. During the court appearance, Mai TT’s lawyer, Knowledge Hombarume, applied for bail. He argued that his client was a first-time offender with a fixed abode and was not a flight risk. Magistrate Taurai Manuwere granted Mai TT bail of ZWL$50,000 (US$1,000) with strict conditions. She was required to surrender her passport and report to the police station twice a week. The matter has been postponed to August 18 for commencement of trial. Mai TT’s arrest and court appearance have sparked widespread reactions on social media. Some users have expressed sympathy and support for her, while others have criticized her alleged actions. The case has also raised questions about the prevalence of fraud and white-collar crime in Zimbabwe. It is hoped that the court process will provide justice for the alleged victim and serve as a deterrent to such offenses in the future.
