One vehicle was found overturned in the ditch, while the other had sustained significant damage. Two occupants of the overturned vehicle were injured. One suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital in a critical condition. The other occupant sustained moderate injuries and was taken to Lakes District Hospital for treatment. The driver of the other vehicle was uninjured. The cause of the accident is under investigation by the New Zealand Police. Frankton Road was closed for several hours while emergency services cleared the scene and conducted their investigations. The driver of the car, a 20-year-old woman, was seriously injured and was taken to Dunedin Hospital by helicopter. Her passenger, a 22-year-old man, was also injured and was taken to Lakes District Hospital by ambulance. The driver of the ute, a 50-year-old man, was not injured. The Serious Crash Unit is investigating the accident.
