Inconsistent Gauff Eyes Further Progress at Wimbledon Coco Gauff, the American tennis sensation, has produced inconsistent performances at Wimbledon this year, but remains optimistic about her chances of continuing her progress in the tournament. The 18-year-old began her campaign with a commanding 6-2, 6-3 victory over Elena-Gabriela Ruse. However, she then stumbled in her second-round match against Mihaela Buzarnescu, losing 6-2, 6-3. Undeterred, Gauff bounced back in the third round with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Greet Minnen. But her hopes of reaching the last 16 were dashed when she fell to Jelena Ostapenko in the fourth round, 6-4, 6-4. Despite the setbacks, Gauff believes she can still make a deep run at Wimbledon. “I’m playing well,” Gauff said. “I’m just not playing consistently well. I’m getting there. I just need to find a way to put it all together.” Gauff’s inconsistency has been evident throughout her career. She has shown flashes of brilliance, reaching the fourth round of both the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2022. But she has also struggled to sustain her high level of play over multiple matches. Wimbledon, however, is a tournament where Gauff has always performed well. She reached the fourth round in her debut appearance in 2019 and made the quarterfinals in 2021. “Wimbledon is a special place for me,” Gauff said. “I always play my best tennis here. I know I can do better. I just need to stay positive and keep working hard.” Gauff will face Amanda Anisimova in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. Anisimova has been in impressive form at Wimbledon this year, winning all four of her matches in straight sets. “Anisimova is a great player,” Gauff said. “She’s playing with a lot of confidence right now. It’s going to be a tough match, but I’m up for the challenge.” If Gauff can overcome Anisimova, she would reach the Wimbledon semifinals for the first time. It would be a major breakthrough in her career and a sign that she has finally found the consistency needed to compete with the top players in the world.Coco Gauff Advances to Wimbledon Third RoundCoco Gauff Advances to Wimbledon Third Round Coco Gauff eased her way into the third round at Wimbledon, despite admitting she could have played better. The No. 2 seed dismissed nervous Romanian qualifier Anca Todoni 6-2, 6-1 in 66 minutes. Gauff made 16 unforced errors and landed 43 percent of her first serves, while Todoni hit 23 unforced errors. Gauff was more troubled by the slick grass, twice slipping and falling, than her opponent. “I could have played cleaner at some points,” Gauff said after the match. “But overall, I’m happy to be through to the next round.” Gauff, who went out in the first round last year at the hands of Sofia Kenin, said she has learned from that disappointment and from her success in winning the US Open to manage expectations and emotions. “I just learned about life a lot,” she said. “What I do, I’m very passionate about, but it’s not ever that serious. It’s a game, it’s a sport. Sometimes the world can make you feel like there is so much pressure and expectation.” The draw has opened up for Gauff after the first-day withdrawals of Aryna Sabalenka and Victoria Azarenka. She will next play British qualifier Sonay Kartel, who defeated France’s Clara Burel. Other notable results from Thursday’s play include: * No. 11 seed Danielle Collins defeated Clara Tauson 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). * No. 20 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia beat Magdalena Frech 7-5, 6-3. * Jule Niemeier defeated Viktorija Golubic 6-2, 6-1.American teenager Coco Gauff is looking to make a deep run at Wimbledon this year after an inconsistent season. The 18-year-old has shown flashes of brilliance, reaching the final of the French Open last year and the semifinals of the Australian Open this year. However, Gauff has also struggled with consistency, losing in the early rounds of several tournaments. She is currently ranked 12th in the world, but she believes she has the potential to be much higher. “I think I can definitely improve my consistency,” Gauff said. “I’ve shown that I can play with the best players in the world, but I need to be able to do it more consistently.” Gauff is hoping to use Wimbledon as a springboard to a successful second half of the season. She has a tough draw at the All England Club, but she is confident that she can make a run. “I’m excited to play at Wimbledon,” Gauff said. “It’s one of my favorite tournaments, and I think I can do well there.”
