Uganda Communications Commission Initiates Nationwide Clampdown on Unprofessional and Illegal Online Media The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has launched a nationwide crackdown on unprofessional and illegal online media platforms to enhance the quality of online journalism and safeguard national security. The move comes in response to concerns over the proliferation of fake news, hate speech, and other harmful content online. According to UCC Executive Director Irene Kaggwa Sewankambo, the regulator has identified several online media outlets that are operating without proper registration, are engaging in unethical practices, or are disseminating content that violates Uganda’s laws. “We have observed that some online media platforms are disseminating false and misleading information, which is having a negative impact on the public,” Sewankambo said. “We also have concerns about the use of hate speech and other harmful content that is being spread online.” The UCC has formed a team of investigators and legal experts to identify and investigate illegal online media platforms. The team will also work with law enforcement agencies to prosecute individuals and organizations involved in unlawful online activities. The crackdown will focus on online media platforms that: * Are not registered with the UCC * Publish content that is false, misleading, or defamatory * Engage in hate speech or incite violence * Violate Uganda’s privacy laws * Share copyrighted material without proper authorization The UCC has urged all online media platforms to adhere to ethical and legal standards. The regulator warned that platforms found to be in violation will face severe penalties, including fines and license revocations. “We are committed to ensuring that the online media space in Uganda is safe and professional,” Sewankambo said. “We will not hesitate to take action against any platform or individual who violates our laws or ethical guidelines.” The crackdown is expected to have a significant impact on Uganda’s online media landscape. It is hoped that the move will promote responsible journalism, reduce the spread of misinformation, and foster a more positive and secure online environment for all Ugandans.UCC Launches Nationwide Campaign Against Unprofessionalism and Illegal Practices in Online MediaUCC Launches Nationwide Campaign Against Unprofessionalism and Illegal Practices in Online Media In response to increasing concerns about unprofessional and illegal practices among online media providers, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has initiated a nationwide campaign. The initiative targets media outlets, including bloggers, online publishers, and online television providers, who have been accused of spreading false information and extorting money from victims. According to the Communications Act 2013, all media outlets, including online, must provide truthful, objective, and balanced content. However, some providers have fabricated damaging stories to force individuals or organizations to pay for their removal or correction. The UCC stresses that transmitting or posting false, malicious, or fabricated content is illegal and violates broadcasting rules. Consequences can include license suspension or revocation, and criminal prosecution. The campaign aims to enforce the law, promote adherence to broadcasting standards, and uphold the Code of Ethics for journalists. All broadcasting service providers, including online platforms, are reminded of their responsibility to maintain the integrity of their content. The public is urged to report extortion or demands for payment to the UCC. The operation, dubbed “Operation Clampdown,” targets individuals and entities engaging in online activities that violate the law, including cyberbullying, hate speech, fake news, and unauthorized online broadcasting. UCC spokesperson Irene Sewankambo confirmed the operation, stating that it is part of the Commission’s efforts to ensure responsible and ethical use of online media in Uganda. “We have observed a proliferation of individuals and entities using online media to engage in illegal and unethical activities, including spreading false information, inciting hatred, and engaging in cyberbullying,” said Sewankambo. “This operation is intended to deter such behavior and to ensure that the online space is used for responsible and positive purposes.” The UCC is working in collaboration with the Uganda Police Force and other relevant authorities to conduct investigations, collect evidence, and take appropriate action against individuals and entities found to be violating the law. The Commission has also issued guidelines for online media practitioners, outlining the ethical and legal obligations they must adhere to when operating online platforms. According to the guidelines, online media platforms must register with the UCC, have a physical address and contact details, and adhere to professional standards of journalism. Individuals found guilty of violating the law may face prosecution, including fines and imprisonment. The UCC urges the public to report any cases of illegal or unprofessional online activities to the Commission for investigation and appropriate action.
