This commitment was expressed by Simon Shayo, Vice President of Sustainability and Corporate Affairs (Africa) at AngloGold Ashanti, GGML’s parent company, during his speech at the closing ceremony of the 9th Research and Innovation Week at UDSM. GGML was one of the primary sponsors of Research and Innovation Week, which showcased 306 research projects. Shayo commended UDSM for designating the previous week as Research and Innovation Week and pledged GGML’s continued support to encourage more research and innovation initiatives in Tanzania. “We strongly believe that we should continue to partner in this endeavor because we are convinced that no country in the world has made significant progress without focusing on research and innovation. Countries that we looked up to 20 or 25 years ago, like Malaysia and Singapore, invested heavily in research and innovation, and we can see the strides they have made,” Shayo said. “That is why, as a mining company, we believe that our presence in this country for almost 25 years is part of the National Development Plan 2025, and we believe that we will be part of the National Development Vision 2050. That is why we will continue to work with you as partners in future similar events,” he added. Shayo urged students to seize research and learning opportunities, highlighting that the outcomes of these innovations have applications in various sectors, including the mining industry. He mentioned that to nurture the talents of graduates and enhance their professional experience, GGML recruits 50 graduates annually from various universities across the country and provides them with one year of training. These graduates, 50% of whom are female, gain hands-on experience in different aspects of the mining sector, Shayo explained. Speaking at the event, Dr. Franklin Rwezimula, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, commended GGML for sponsoring the event and called for expanding the scope of Research and Innovation Week by involving research partners whose research is registered and affiliated with various academic departments. “The results of research conducted by various universities in the country, including the University of Dar es Salaam, have been an important reference in implementing various national, regional, and international policies, plans, and strategies related to research and innovation,” Rwezimula said. “This event provides a good platform to encourage a generation of young and budding academics to engage in research and innovations that respond to the economic and social challenges of our country and the world at large,” he added. He emphasized that by showcasing their academic work and research findings, Tanzanian universities can influence government policies and the job market, strengthen the existing relationship between universities, employers, and donors, and ultimately foster collaboration opportunities within and outside the country. Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research at UDSM, Prof. Nelson Boniface, expressed gratitude to GGML for enabling the success of Research and Innovation Week, which featured staff and students showcasing their diverse research activities and projects. He acknowledged the importance of research and innovation and emphasized the need for universities to engage in these endeavors at the appropriate level. Research and Innovation Week is a key platform for the university to promote research and innovation through dissemination, stakeholder engagement, and public awareness of vital research and innovation initiatives, activities, and their impact. This year’s theme was “Fostering research and innovation through university-industry partnerships.”The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) and Green Global Mobility Limited (GGML+) have reaffirmed their commitment to promoting research and innovation through a continued partnership.
