Around 7:30 pm, witnesses reported a man driving a pickup truck erratically through the city center, crashing into parked cars, storefronts, and a light pole. The truck, which was later identified as stolen, was chased by police officers for several blocks before being stopped near the intersection of 6th Avenue and Locust Street. The driver, identified as 32-year-old John Smith, was taken into custody without incident. Police said he appeared to be intoxicated and is now facing charges of driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, and criminal mischief. The rampage caused significant damage to businesses and infrastructure in the area. Several storefronts had their windows shattered, and one building sustained structural damage. Traffic was disrupted for several hours as police worked to clear the scene. Thankfully, no injuries were reported as a result of the incident. “We are grateful that no one was hurt,” said Des Moines Police Chief Dana Wingert. “Our officers acted swiftly to apprehend the suspect and prevent further damage.” Police are continuing their investigation into the motive behind the rampage. Smith is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday to face charges.
