Born on February 23rd, the adorable calf is a healthy and curious addition to the zoo’s giraffe family. The yet-to-be-named female was born to mother, Luna, and father, Zuri. She stands at about six feet tall and weighs approximately 150 pounds at birth. Zookeepers report that both Luna and her calf are doing well. “We are so excited to welcome this new life to our zoo,” said Tom Gelburd, General Curator at the St. Louis Zoo. “Giraffes are such majestic animals, and to witness the birth of a new calf is truly a special experience.” The baby giraffe and her mother will bond in a secluded area for the first few weeks of her life. During this time, Luna will provide her calf with milk and protection. Zookeepers will closely monitor the new family to ensure their health and well-being. Once the calf has gained strength, she will join the rest of the giraffe herd in the zoo’s expansive Giraffe Savanna exhibit. The herd includes four other giraffes, ranging in age from one to nine years old. Giraffes are herbivores that primarily feed on leaves and twigs from trees. They are the tallest land animals on earth, with males reaching heights of up to 18 feet and females up to 14 feet. Giraffes are also known for their long necks, which allow them to reach high into trees for food. The arrival of the new baby giraffe is a testament to the St. Louis Zoo’s commitment to the conservation and care of endangered species. Giraffes are classified as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), due to habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict. The zoo is encouraging visitors to come and meet the new baby giraffe soon. Guests can observe the calf and her mother in the secluded area or await her debut in the Giraffe Savanna exhibit.
