Jacksonville: Alligator Patrol on High Alert as Heatwave Drives Reptiles into PoolsJacksonville: Alligator Patrol on High Alert as Heatwave Drives Reptiles into Pools Amidst a relentless heatwave scorching Jacksonville, Florida, the city’s Alligator Patrol stands on high alert as an increasing number of alligators have been venturing into residential swimming pools. The scorching heat has forced alligators from their natural habitats, such as creeks and ponds, to search for cooler water sources. As a result, these apex predators have been spotted lurking in unsuspecting backyard pools. “We’ve seen a significant uptick in alligator sightings in pools over the past few days,” said Mark Walbeck, supervisor of Jacksonville’s Alligator Patrol. “The heat is driving them out of their comfort zones, and they’re looking for any available water.” The patrol, composed of trained wildlife specialists, has been responding to calls and proactively patrolling neighborhoods to mitigate the risk posed by alligators. In one recent incident, a six-foot alligator was removed from a family’s pool after they noticed it swimming near their children. “It’s not uncommon for alligators to be in the area,” said resident Sarah Johnson. “But finding one in our pool was definitely a shock.” Residents are urged to remain vigilant and take precautions to prevent encounters with alligators. They are advised to: * Secure pool fences and gates * Keep pets away from the water’s edge * Avoid swimming in unfamiliar waters * Report any alligator sightings to the Alligator Patrol at (904) 630-2489 The Alligator Patrol reminds the public that alligators are wild animals and should never be approached or provoked. Even small alligators can inflict serious injuries. “We want people to be aware of the potential dangers and take common-sense measures to protect themselves and their families,” said Walbeck. As the heatwave persists, the Alligator Patrol will continue its increased surveillance to ensure the safety of Jacksonville residents.
