The meeting concluded with the signing of an updated Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on emissions trading between the EU and China. The agreement highlights their shared commitment to carbon pricing as a tool for achieving climate neutrality. Both parties expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of the meeting and agreed to continue cooperation on environmental and climate issues.EU-China Dialogue on Environment and Climate Brussels, 2 September 2023 – The fifth EU-China High-Level Dialogue on Environment and Climate was held today in Brussels. The dialogue was co-chaired by the European Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevičius, and the Chinese Minister of Ecology and Environment, Huang Runqiu. The dialogue focused on a wide range of issues, including climate change mitigation and adaptation, biodiversity protection, circular economy, and pollution control. Both sides exchanged views on the latest developments in their respective policies and measures, and identified areas for enhanced cooperation. Commissioner Sinkevičius stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation between the EU and China in the fight against climate change. “The EU and China are two major emitters of greenhouse gases,” he said. “We have a responsibility to work together to reduce our emissions and transition to a clean energy future.” Minister Huang emphasized the importance of biodiversity protection. “Biodiversity is essential for the health of our planet and our economies,” he said. “We need to work together to protect and restore our ecosystems.” The two sides also discussed the upcoming COP27 climate conference in Egypt. They agreed to continue their close cooperation in the run-up to the conference and to work together to achieve a successful outcome. The EU-China High-Level Dialogue on Environment and Climate is a regular event that provides a platform for high-level exchanges on environmental and climate issues. The dialogue is part of the broader EU-China Strategic Partnership.
