Tragedy Strikes St Patrick’s College: Popular Rugby Coach, Willie Leota, Passes Away St Patrick’s College in Wellington, New Zealand, is reeling from the sudden and tragic loss of beloved rugby coach, Willie Leota. Leota, a respected figure within the school and the wider rugby community, passed away after suffering a heart attack on Thursday, 17th March 2023. He was rushed to Wellington Hospital but was unable to be revived. Students, staff, and alumni have been left devastated by the news. Leota was known for his unwavering passion for rugby, his infectious enthusiasm, and his ability to inspire and mentor young players. “Willie was a pillar of our school,” said St Patrick’s College Rector, Christopher Yule. “He lived and breathed rugby, but more importantly, he cared deeply for his students and always put their well-being first.” Leota began coaching at St Patrick’s College in 2005 and quickly established himself as a top coach. He guided the school’s First XV to numerous victories and championships, including the prestigious Wellington Secondary Schools Premier One title in 2015. “Willie had an uncanny ability to bring out the best in his players,” said former student and current All Black, Dane Coles. “He was a fierce competitor, but he always treated his opponents with respect.” Outside of rugby, Leota was also involved in mentoring programs and community initiatives. He was passionate about giving back to his community and making a positive impact on the lives of young people. “Willie was more than just a coach,” said his wife, Josephine. “He was a father figure, a mentor, and a friend to so many. He will be deeply missed.” St Patrick’s College has canceled all rugby activities for the weekend and will hold a special assembly on Monday to pay tribute to Leota. The school is also providing counseling services to students and staff who are struggling to cope with the loss. The rugby community throughout New Zealand has expressed its condolences and offered support to Leota’s family and friends. All Black coach, Ian Foster, described Leota as “a true legend of the game.” Willie Leota’s legacy will continue to inspire and guide the rugby community at St Patrick’s College and beyond.
