According to Dr. Bonaa, there is a need for the State to ensure that NIA workers receive better emoluments as a measure to safeguard the data of citizens entrusted to their care.
“Because these people oversee our data, data that is used for all activities, including transactions and as a travel document, they should not waste time on it like any other labor dispute. I am dismayed by the fact that the Labor Commission don’t apply to solve it. Now we have an identity card, which is the NIA card, and those who work there, if you don’t take care of them, then you don’t have to tell us that our information is safe and well-cared for,” he told GhanaWeb.
NIA staff went on an indefinite strike on Monday, June 10, 2024, over grievances related to their conditions of service.
This action was announced by the NIA chapter of the Public Service Workers Union (PSWU) Divisional Executive Council of the Trades Union Congress (TUC).
The union had initially planned to go on strike on March 24, but deferred its decision after meeting representatives of the Fair Wages and Wages Commission and the NIA management. Despite this, the Union claims that the government acted in bad faith during the negotiations.
A statement signed by Council Secretary Kwabena Kyeremeh and Council President Bangfudeme Nyuzaghi details their concerns, including:
• Undue delays by the government team in the negotiation process.
• The stance and reluctance of the government team to grant the NIA specific allocations for institutions.
• Failure by management to implement the approved service plan for NIA personnel.
Meanwhile, the NIA workers union has announced the suspension of the ongoing strike pending the outcome of negotiations with the National Labor Commission.
