San Diego Zoo Welcomes New Giraffe CalfSan Diego Zoo Welcomes New Giraffe Calf The San Diego Zoo announces the exciting arrival of a new giraffe calf, born on March 8th. The calf is a female and is the fourth offspring of mother Eleanor and father Caesar. Weighing in at over 150 pounds and standing at approximately 6 feet tall, the calf has already captured the hearts of visitors and staff alike. She has been named “Zahara,” which means “flower” in Swahili. Zahara is a Masai giraffe, a subspecies native to East Africa. Masai giraffes are known for their distinctive blotchy pattern and long necks. The calf’s birth contributes to the conservation program at the zoo, as Masai giraffes are listed as “near threatened” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). “We are thrilled to welcome this beautiful calf into our giraffe herd,” said Doug Myers, Executive Director of the San Diego Zoo. “Her birth is a testament to our commitment to wildlife conservation and the care we provide for our animals.” Zahara is currently bonding with her mother and will eventually join the zoo’s giraffe herd in the coming weeks. Visitors can catch a glimpse of the adorable calf and her family in the African Savanna exhibit. The birth of Zahara is a joyous occasion for the San Diego Zoo and a reminder of the importance of protecting endangered species. Through their conservation efforts and educational programs, the zoo aims to inspire visitors to care for wildlife and their habitats.
