This is part of enhanced security measures to ensure public safety and peace in the state during the festive period. The ban on Durbar activities, an important traditional event after Eid-el-Kabir, follows extensive safety reports and consultations with relevant stakeholders, according to a statement issued on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa. This is the first time the Durbar has been canceled since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The three-day Durbar is the largest festival in the state, featuring a splendid display of horse riding and cultural activities that always attracts a huge crowd from within and outside Kano State. The event is usually organized by the Emir of Kano. Despite the restriction on Durbar activities, the Command has advised worshipers to continue their Eid prayers at designated Eid prayer locations, as was done in previous years. “Faithful people are advised to perform their normal Eid prayers at the various places designated for Eid prayers, as was traditionally done in the past,” the statement said. The Command urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the nearest Police Station. The statement emphasized the importance of continued collaboration and cooperation of all stakeholders to maintain a safe environment. “Adequate security deployments have been put in place to ensure that law and order does not break down in all parts of the state before, during and after the festive period,” the statement said. LEADERSHIP reports that the latest development comes against the backdrop of a request by the deposed 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, to the State Police Command, asking for special security measures for him to host the upcoming Eid el-Kabir festivities in Kano Emirate in a letter addressed to the Commissioner of Police dated June 10, 2024. Bayero was dethroned by the Kano State government about three weeks ago, and in his place, Governor Abba Yusuf reinstated the 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II. However, the former refused to let him go and continued to claim the throne of Kano from a mini-palace in the commercial city, a fact that has put Kano on edge ever since. Both Sanusi II and Bayero have continued to hold courts and conduct ceremonial activities from their respective palaces in the state amid a legal fight to outdo each other. The Kano State Police Command has banned all Durbar activities during the upcoming Sallah festivities in the state. This was disclosed in a statement issued by the command’s Spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna, on Tuesday in Kano. Haruna explained that the ban became necessary following credible intelligence at the disposal of the command, indicating plans by some disgruntled elements to cause trouble during the festivities. He said the command received information that some miscreants were planning to use the Durbar activities as a cover to unleash mayhem on innocent citizens. Haruna said, “In view of this, the command, under the leadership of CP Sama’ila Shu’aibu Dikko, fsi, has resolved to ban all Durbar activities during the Eid-el-Kabir festivities in Kano State. “This decision was taken after due consultation with relevant stakeholders, including the Kano State Government, traditional rulers, and religious leaders. “The command wishes to assure the good people of Kano State of its commitment to ensuring a peaceful and crime-free Sallah celebration. “We urge all law-abiding citizens to cooperate with the police and other security agencies in maintaining peace and order during the festivities. “Anyone found violating this ban will be dealt with according to the law.”
