The announcement was made at an event held at the Windhoek Country Club and Casino on Thursday night, which was attended by government officials, former football stars, and current players. The foundation will build a state-of-the-art soccer complex in Mondesa. The ambitious project includes a netball court, a gym, and even an Adidas store. Construction is set to begin this year, with completion scheduled for 2026. Hotto, who plays as a midfielder for Orlando Pirates in the South African Premier League, pledged a significant sum of $2 million to launch the initiative. The 33-year-old is a regular fixture on the Namibian national team, the Brave Warriors. In May 2015, he scored twice in the Cosafa Cup final to help Namibia win its first international trophy. More recently, Hotto won the Nedbank Cup in South Africa with Orlando Pirates on June 10, when they beat rivals Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1. Speaking at the event, Hotto explained his dual motivation for launching the foundation: giving back to the community that raised him while also laying the foundation for his post-gaming career. The primary mission of the foundation is to identify and cultivate Namibia’s future football stars. “It’s something that comes from me and my wife, including my entire family. It wasn’t easy to come up with the $2 million, but I realized I had a vision when I started the foundation, and with God’s help, I know it will come to fruition,” she said. Collin Benjamin, coach of the Namibia national football team, also spoke at the event, emphasizing the crucial need for footballers to plan for life after their playing careers. “There is this unfortunate stereotype that footballers are uneducated and lack plans for the future, and that we often go through life blind. But Deon Hotto is a shining example, who plans ahead and takes charge of his future, while also supporting the next generation,” he said. Benjamin expressed his admiration for Hotto, saying, “I have been waiting for a player to take this initiative, and Deon has stepped up. When you retire, that’s when real life really begins. You need to stay active and find your new path. The routine you had disappears, and that can be a difficult adjustment.” “So I am incredibly happy that Deon is championing the future generation and giving back to the community.” Ricardo Mannetti, who also mentored Hotto at the national level, praised the former African Stars winger for the great initiative and said it is a crucial step he took in life to take care of himself and those who will come after him. “I am happy to be here today to witness this event. I’ve known Hotto since he was the head coach of the Brave Warriors. He and I started at the same time; We made our debut around the same time, and seeing him launch this great project that will nurture future talents is something to applaud for. I will be here and offer my knowledge to this exciting project, and we hope and believe that it will materialize and reach the expected heights,” he added. Other DH Foundation projects include the construction of DH futsal and netball pitches in Omaruru, scheduled to begin in 2026 and completion in 2027. Similarly, futsal pitches for soccer and netball will be developed in Okahandja, with construction beginning in 2028 and finishing in 2029. In April this year, the foundation donated football and netball kits, stationery, and a laptop worth NZ$30,000 to Paheye Primary School in Omaruru in an effort to fight inequality and support disadvantaged students. The foundation also revealed that it will host its annual Deon Hotto Charity tournament in Omaruru from June 28 to 30.
